Why Branded Socks Are a High ROI Trade Show Swag Item
By Victoria Simmons
Branded socks are high ROI trade show swag when you trade them for a real conversation instead of leaving them in a bowl. People keep a good pair and wear it long after the show, but the return comes from the leads you collect at the booth. Hand them out from day one, ask for a badge scan or a short chat in exchange, and track what each lead cost.
A lot of booth swag ends up in a hotel trash can before the flight home. And a bowl of free socks empties fast while telling you nothing about who took a pair.
Why socks earn a spot at the booth
People wear them. A pen gets lost. A good pair of socks goes on at the gym, at the office and on the weekend. Our custom crew socks are 70% combed cotton with 200-needle knitting, a no-slip cuff and a reinforced toe and heel.
They fit the crowd. For fitness, sports or outdoor shows, athletic crew socks add a compression cuff and a terry cloth bottom.
They pack flat. Socks ship to the venue in a few boxes, and visitors can carry a pair home in a pocket.
They start conversations. A bold design on the table gets people asking about it, and that question is your opening.
Your team can wear them too. Peloton dressed its cycle class instructors in custom athletic socks and brought them to a recruiting event at AfroTech 2019. Read the Peloton case study.
Design for the booth
Use your brand colors, a pattern people would wear anyway and a logo that reads from a few feet away. An event theme or a line only your industry gets makes the pair worth keeping. Our designers send free mockups with unlimited revisions. For step-by-step help, see how to put your logo on trade show socks.
Skip the size guessing
If you'd rather not split an order by size, DTG printed socks are one size fits most, up to men's size 12. They're printed all the way around and made in the U.S. in 2 to 3 days, which also helps when a show sneaks up on you. For knit styles, ask your rep how sizing works for the style you pick.
How to hand them out
Start on day one. Traffic is highest early, and word gets around the hall.
Trade a pair for something. A badge scan, a two-minute demo or a short survey turns a freebie into a lead.
Hold some back. A special colorway for people who book a meeting gives your team a reason to ask.
Put a QR code on the hang tag or wrap. Point it at a booking page or an offer only for that show, so you can count the scans.

How to work out what the giveaway earned
Here's a simple example. Say you bring 300 pairs to a two-day show and trade each one for a badge scan. After the show, your sales team marks 45 of those scans as real prospects, and 5 of them become customers within six months.
Cost per qualified lead: what you spent on the socks, divided by 45.
Cost per customer: the same spend, divided by 5.
Return: what those 5 customers are worth to you, compared with the spend.
Compare those numbers with what other channels cost you per lead. Track the same things at every show: pairs handed out, scans, QR visits, meetings booked and deals closed.
When to order
Knit socks take 2 to 3 weeks to make once you approve the design, and most styles start at 50 pairs. Leave time for mockups and for shipping to the venue. DTG printed socks take 2 to 3 days, so they're the backup when a show is close. If you're also sending kits to people who couldn't make it, we can pack and ship each kit to their address.
When socks aren't the right swag
If most people walking the floor will never buy from you, free swag mostly draws a crowd that won't. Keep the socks for people who stop and talk. And if your goal is three or four big meetings, a dinner or a gift sent after the meeting may do more than any booth giveaway.

Frequently asked questions
Are branded socks good trade show swag?
Yes, if you use them to start conversations. People keep and wear a good pair, and a pair traded for a badge scan gives you a lead to follow up with.
How many pairs should I bring to a trade show?
Plan from the number of conversations you expect, not the show's total attendance. Add extras for your booth team, and keep in mind most styles start at 50 pairs.
Should I give socks to everyone who stops by?
It's better to trade them for something, like a badge scan or a quick demo. That way each pair goes to someone you can follow up with.
What sizes should I bring?
Ask your rep how sizing works for the knit style you pick. If you'd rather not split sizes, DTG printed socks are one size fits most, up to men's size 12.
How far ahead should I order socks for a trade show?
For knit socks, approve your design at least 2 to 3 weeks before you need them shipped, plus shipping time to the venue. DTG printed socks take 2 to 3 days.
